 Doesn't the evidence runs the other way [I ask you]. The imagined reader is one of most author's collaborative others. When the desired reader is the author's intellectual double, the idea of collaboration has been rejected [but perhaps not entirely convincingly].

SB's reply: I recognize that my query seems to run counter to most of Nabokov's stated positions, but perhaps they were not always consistent, and most likely we do not need to take all of his statements as sincere professions de foi.
