Family bookshop began scholar's odyssey

It started in his parents' Palmerston North bookshop, blossomed into a love of literature and has earned a world-renowned academic another accolade. Distinguished Professor Brian Boyd, from the University of Auckland, was one of 12 top Kiwi scholars awarded a prestigious medal at the Royal Society of New Zealand 2014 Research Honours in Wellington last night. The top honours, the Rutherford Medal, went to Massey University's Peter Schwerdtfeger, based at the Auckland campus, for his work in physics, chemistry and biological sciences. Boyd, who was born in Northern Ireland and raised in Palmerston North, was awarded the Aronui Medal for his contribution to the humanities. Boyd is recognised as a leading world scholar on the Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov…
