THOUGHTS: Henri IV

What is interesting about Henri IV (in our context), he was stabbed by
Ravalliac. His first wife was Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot). Dumas
pere's novel "Queen Margot" was among Gorky's favorite reading in his
boyhood. One of the characters of Gorky's V lyudiakh ("Away from home,"
second part of Gorky's autobiographic trylogy), the young lady who
sympathizes with the servant boy Alyosha Peshkov and gives him books from
her library, is
called Koroleva Margo ("Queen Margot").
By the way, it is interesting to compare the kitchen boy Kim
Beauharnais
spying on Van and Ada to Leo Tolstoy's words about Gorky (quoted by Gorky
himself in his piece on Chekhov): "He has the soul of a spy (u nego dusha
soglyadataya), he came from somewhere into a strange, Canaan, land, looks
closely at everything, notices everything and reports everything he has seen
to some God of his." According to Tolstoy (he said all this to Chekhov and
Chekhov, laughing, passed Tolstoy's words to Gorky), women do not love
Gorky, because he has a duck nose (only unhappy or evil people have duck
noses), and women, like dogs, have a flair for a good man ("u zhenshchin,
kak
u sobak, est' chut'yo k khoroshemu cheloveku"). Note the "sobak"!
