Reading Lolita in Dubuque

In observance of Banned Books Week, multiple copies of Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 classic novel Lolita, as well as Azar Nafisi's 2003 memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran, are now on display and available for check out at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, Lolita is a highly controversial and frequently banned story about a middle-aged man who is obsessed with a 12-year-old girl. Lolita is available in regular and large print and audio-book formats on the main floor of the Library.

Also, on Friday, October 3, Carnegie-Stout will host a free screening of Stanley Kubrick's 1962 movie Lolita. Professor Paul Kohl from Loras College will introduce the movie, and open discussion will be encouraged after the show. The movie, which is not rated, will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Library's 3rd Floor Auditorium.

Banned Books Week, September 27 through October 4, 2008, is a nationwide campaign to promote freedom of expression. Sponsored by librarians, booksellers, publishers and writers, Banned Books Week has been observed every year since 1982.
