[EDNote: In addition to my other travails, it appears that my
university's email system had serious problems from 12/28 to about 1/5.
It is probably due to these that JF's earlier message did not come
through. I've taken steps to double-check my receipt of your
submissions, and the problem appears to be resolved. However, if your
submission is not posted (or rejected!) within 24 hours, please do let
me know at the editors' address link below. Thanks! ~SB]
----------------------------------------------------------
A few minor points, two of which I posted in a note that
got lost with the editor switch or in some other way:

To Stan Kelly-Bootle: You said that i has four square
roots, but it has only two: ±[1/2^(1/2) + i 1/2^(1/2)],
or ±(cos pi/4 + i sin pi/4) if you prefer. The other
two numbers you had in mind are square roots of -1.

To Jansy: "Rosa dos ventos" in English is a "wind rose".
Since the young Nabokov admired Housman, I feel obliged to
mention that some old ones had 12 rays instead of 16: "From
far, from eve and morning,/ And yon twelve-winded sky..."
Also, cardinals aren't particularly related to waxwings,
though they have similar pointed crests.
