Wonderful comments! You went straight to the connection I've been trying to establish between "plexible" ( pliable) and "clockwork automannequins" growing from "vorskiddies" to adults, all of them covered by a plexible "vorskin"... I haven't yet worked it out because of the irradiating meanings ( plexible and Pale Fire's "plexed artistry" and clockwork deadly Gradus, created by Kinbote; also "vorskin" and what sounds to my ears as a reference to circumcision, or the mysteries of male-erection).
I also wonder if these automatons are inspired by E.T.Hoffman's dancing doll ( no time to find the story where she appears, I vaguely remember the Sandman and the name Coppelius, but it's not enough ), or a later addition from 1914 Raymond Roussel's "Locus Solus"...
