Nabokov has much to answer for. Amis's latest, and now this from
Mailer...not to mention that telescoping procession of other fussily articulate,
enviably amoral narrators receding from the present towards Humbert's birth. The
lure is understandable but the risk (and failure rate) is dauntingly high.
