Two cents on Coates and Braid

I remember Coates and Clark spools of thread. I do not remember
Coates & Braid, though. Are you sure there was such a brand? Perhaps
Coates and Clark marketed braid, a popular item for dressmakers in
the days of sailor suits.

Mary Krimmel

Dear Mary,

Coates and Clark - - that also rings a bell. Now I'm not sure where I got
Coates & Braid!

James Braid was a Scottish surgeon before he became interested in hypnosis.
I came across his name while looking for the meaning of the odd word
"autoneurypnological" in Pale Fire. In 1842 Braid published "Neurypenology
or The Rationale of Nervous Sleep Considered In Relation With Animal
Magnetism."

Very possibly I invented Coates and Braid. Thanks for the actual brand name.

Carolyn
