Dear Elspeth Jajdelska,

I too have argued that this is an absurd reason for an intelligent girl
with
any kind of sense of selfhood (which her wonderful parents presumably
would
have bestowed on her) to drown herself.

What you call the "moral balance" of the book does teeter on this
problem.

I won't burden you with my unpopular theories, but let me encourage you
in
your doubts, they are healthy ones. And it's no chestnut but a nice
juicy
nut worth the cracking.
