Subject
Query: other contemporary literary allusions in PF?
From
Date
Body
Two (tiny) things come to mind: an indirect reference to Mark Van Doren
(1894-1972) and a direct one to Carl Sandburg (1878-1967)--both living
poets, though quite over the hill, at the time of Pale Fire's
publication.

p. 244: "those gentlemen who cheat on television quizzes" refers to Van
Doren's son Charles who was exposed as cheating on "Twenty-One" in the
late
50s.

275: "Asked about the Soviet exhibition at the New York Coliseum, Carl
Sandburg, a poet, replied, and I quote: 'They make their appeal on the
highest of intellectual levels.'"
