Humbert

Members: Ferny Coipel (vocals, guitar, Wurlitzer), Rimsky Pons (vocals, guitar), Heather (vocals), Tony Landa (bass), Cesar Lavin (drums, percussion, vocals).

Comments: Named after the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov▓s Lolita, Humbert indeed sings about the pitfalls of love, sex and infatuation. But even the band▓s most romantically mixed-up numbers, like "My Baby," "Killing Lori" and "Sara," are delivered by innocent-sounding, hard-pop melodies that are played loudly but never obnoxiously. Based in Hialeah, Humbert recently added to its lineup the first-name-only vocalist Heather, who now joins the band on its frequent treks to Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, Atlanta and Tennessee, places where the band has cultivated fan bases large enough to rival its listeners back home and where some adjective-deprived critics have taken to labeling the group▓s music "pop-core emo." The group released a self-titled CD in 1999, and currently is demoing songs for a new album. "We▓d like to release the next CD on a small established indie," bassist Landa says. "We▓re not really interested in the majors. We don▓t want to play that game." Look for Humbert often at Tobacco Road and Churchill▓s and on the Web at: http://www.humbert.net/home.htm .
