EDITOR's NOTE. I think that Evgenii N. is the brother of Dmitri Nabokov,
also a hockey pro. So far as I know, neither is related to THE Nabokov.

I see that another Nabokov is making a name for himself in the NHL
(appropriately, as a goal tender). For List members who have not heard
of him (as I hadn't before today), I copy here a couple of snippets from an
article in the local sports page:

> Nabokov has Sharks on top
>
> By Karen Price
> Camera Sports Writer
>
> DENVER The meteoric rise of San Jose rookie goaltender Evgeni
> Nabokov shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who saw his NHL debut.

> The game was Jan. 19, 2000, in the Pepsi Center against the Colorado
> Avalanche. Nabokov, who didn't learn he was going to start the game
> until warmups, stopped 39 shots on goal as the Sharks and the Avs
> battled to a scoreless tie.

> It wasn't just beginner's luck.
>
> Nearly a year later, Nabokov is tied with Colorado's Patrick Roy for
> the most wins in the NHL this season
> with 21. He was just named the Rookie of the Month for the second
> month in a row, and is the surprise
> front-runner for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year. He's also
> the reason the Sharks are establishing themselves as true contenders
> for the Stanley Cup this year.

> The 25-year-old native of Kazakhstan was named Rookie of the Month after
> going 7-2-2 in December with
> a 2.11 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and two shutouts.
> He was also November's Rookie of the Month.
>
> If it seems like Nabokov came out of nowhere, that's because he pretty
> much did. Just San Jose's ninth choice (219th overall) in the 1994
> Entry Draft, he spent most of last season in the IHL playing for the
> Cleveland Lumberjacks. Before that, he spent two seasons with the
> Kentucky Thoroughblades of the AHL, where Avalanche head coach Bob
> Hartley got to see him play many times against the Hershey Bears.
