And someone else made the connection between the two, because Balthus's
paintings were used as the cover art on some of VN's paperbacks isued by
Penguin Books here in the UK. In particular, Balthus' erotic but
slightly sinister nymphets had significantly Humbertian overtones.
Balthus painted his favourite model, Therese, a number of times and you
can view some of these paintings on line at
http://members.nbci.com/galeriejeune/balthus.htm I believe that the
third of these, Therese Dreaming, was used in a cropped form for the
cover of the old Penguin Modern Classics edition of 'Lolita', since
replaced by a new format.
