To the discussion on Sherlock Holmes in "Pale Fire" I always wondered
what China was doing in that passage.
Spending some time in the country (China) to the certain degree I
understood the passage better.
In China people (especially old) walk backwards.
Another suggestion. I feel that Hazel Shade was transformed into one
of Saturniid Moth but which one I could not say at this moment (my
guess is that it is Antheraea pernyi.
