I also have found it difficult to explain why Nabokov would reject all of
Faulkner without making exceptions for works like S & F. I think part of
the reason was Nabokov's dislike of "regional" writers, whether in Russia
or in the US. I am not sure he ever went beyond his original prejudice
against Faulkner's "peripheral" origins to give his writings a real
chance.
