Galya Dimet pointed out the connections between Pnin and Ivanov
("Perfection"): 1) Both are teachers and have weak hearts, and 2) A
possible parallel in the relationships of Pnin/Victor and Ivanov/David.
(So many V's there.) She wrote about "Perfection", "to me it reads like
an early precursor of the Pnin-and-Victor 'motif'". At that time, by
coincidence, I re-read "Shigaev" and noticed that the narrator was named
Victor and that his mentor (Shigaev) dies of a weak heart. That's all.
Perhaps someone else can go deeper? Are there more Victors to be found,
or more weak hearts?

But I do wish Brian Boyd would tell me why HE thinks David ("Perfection"
is Jewish.
