Sasha Glebovskaya of St. Petersburg kindly brought me two LOLITA
artifacts. The first is a "Lolita Maxi" (Zippo-type) cigarette lighter
which comes in various garish colors. The name is stamped in gold on the
lighter body and is also presed into the metal top. The second,
appropriately, is several packs of "Lolita" filter cigarettes which
apparently comes in three grades: "Classics," "Lights," and, presumably,"
a premium grade. The last, in a gold hard- pack, features, front & back,
an exceedingly well-developed, prone, young woman--upper body rampant,
topless, with some sort of odd thong-type bottom, black-stockings, and
high heels saucily waving in the air. She is not smoking. The boxes bear
Russian import tax stamps and the Surgeon General's warning. Manufactured
under the authority of the trademark owner. Celadon Corporation NY.NY,
10019. Since Sankt Peterburg is VN's home-town, it is satisfying to know
that these items are apparently available only there and not in Moscow.

Paraphrased from a local newspaper report of a charity
spelling-bee: "For safety's sake, the Hauser Chemical Research team faced
the ordeal with lab goggles in place, while the Sheriff's Department's
Spelling Enforcers preferred to wear those intimidating law enforcement
shades. Well, Deputy Terry Berkwiler, a.k.a. "Lolita," donned his pink,
heart-shaped sunglasses, which gave a whole new meaning to the term
'intimidation'."
