I read Mary Bellino's post with great interest, being a very ardent Waugh
fan and the creator of his only extant web site. Last November, while in
Austin, I visited the famous research library which happens to hold his
library. Though my main purpose was to find any comments or marginalia in
Waugh's editions of Churcill's books, I also had them bring out the
copies of LOLITA and PALE FIRE. He made no notes in either, but I had
wondered at the time what his reaction to PALE FIRE had been.

Healthy skepticism and a profound respect for modern scientific
