In the last Nabokov issue of the Russian Literature Triquarterly (24
[1991]: 213-37), I published an essay entitled "Purloined Letters: Poe,
Doyle, Nabokov" which studied the influence of Poe's "The Purloined
Letter" on Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia" and VN's Real Life of
Sebastian Knight in light of intertextuality, anxiety of influence, and
Lacan's reading of Poe's story.
