The Popular Library edition of THE GIFT is
most definitely hot stuff. A Montgomery Clift
clone in shirtsleeves, slacks and loafers looks back
uneasily at a Cleopatra-era Liz Taylor look-alike
wearing a low-cut evening gown. She reclines
languorously on a pillow, one bare bejewelled arm
extended seductively, another coyly playing with her
long hair. The color scheme is gold on purple and violet.

On the back cover:

"A bizarre and special romp"
"A powerful kick"
"An occasion of delight"

The blurb reads: "From the dazzling author of Lolita comes
this superbly wrought novel of people driven by the demands
of memory and desire, the spirit and the flesh, as they struggle
to find themselves in the strange half-world of a foreign city . . ."

Hmm . . . Not a word about Chernyshevsky.
