I have a Pale Fire, in Russian, dated 1991, that depicts a mirror in which
a regal figure made of translucent ice stands, arms folded. Behind the
mirror, shadowy figures of troll-like dimensions (one with spiky hair, like
the rubber dolls) hold other mirrors, which bounce a laser-like beam of
light around. From behind the first mirror there extends a rat's tail.
I never really looked at it before now. It's ugly but I've seen worse.
Reminds me of my old set of "The Chronicles of Narnia." If I were doing a
cover of PF, I'd skip flames, play down the royalty, and mostly picture the
Shades' lighted window as seen from Kinbote's place (which, in my mind,
looks like my next door neighbor's from childhood, minus the carport).
This edition also contains Conversation Piece 1945, Signs and Symbols, Time
and Ebb, and The Vane Sisters.
I also have the Lolita in French with the front-and-back cover.
I can scan the covers if anyone is curious.
