I think Amis' quote comes from Selected Letters (Vintage, p.41):

"I need a man who knows English better than Russian - and a man, not a
woman. I am frankly homosexual on the subject of translators."

VN was looking for somebody to make the first draft of "The Gift"
in English. He was not speaking of writers, though.
