Well, Michael, you'll likely get a dozen different opinions, but
here are mine.

The two best short stories VN ever wrote are "Signs and Symbols"
and "The Vane Sisters."
As is true with all VN's literature, they command the closest
attention, especially the latter. To my mind these two are unique in the
history of the short story.
From there, the best, in no particular order, are "Cloud, Castle,
Lake," "Spring in Fialta," "First Love," "La Veneziana" (his first real
gem, in my opinion) "Terra Incognita" and "Perfection." These are all
great stories.
Some others, a little great but pleasureable nonetheless, are
"The Aurelian" and "A Matter of Chance."
I'll be most interested to learn your own opinion.
