It sounds as if I'm the one who needs to eat crow re Nabokov's contractual
obligations and Lolita. I was sure that I read about this in a VN or
Kubrick biography, but after digging through Boyd and Field, I can find
nothing to support this notion. That said, I still think the ambulance
image is wondefully telling, and Kubrick an overrated artist. But anyway,
sincerest apologies.

On a related note, can anyone tell me if Nabokov saw any of Robbe-Grillet's
post-Marienbad films (Eden and After, Transeuro-Express)? These seem to be
richly Nabokovian works.

Also: does anyone know if VN read Robbe-Grillet's later novels, such as the
superb Project for a Revolution in New York and Topology of a Phantom City?
These books, in my humble opinion, far surpass the earlier Robbe-Grillet,
and after going through them, Transparent Things reads like a loving salute
to the later R-G. And interestingly, there is a character named "Vaniadis"
(!!) in Topology. Has anyone explored this connection?

I know that VN was enthusiastic about The Voyeur and Jealousy. What did he
think of the older, more baroque R-G?
