Can anyone point me in the direction of any views VN ever expressed about Graham Greene the writer? I am aware of their interactions around the publication of Lolita; there seems to have been some limited correspondence between them plus some later VN observations relating to the Lolita saga, for example in Strong Opinions, and also some mentions in Vera's correspondence (We have travelled thousands of miles, we have made the acquaintance of various writers, from Graham Greene (entertaining) to Moravia (very much less so)). But I wonder if VN expressed any views on Greene's writing?
On a related topic, VN seems to have given Greene, in London in November 1959, two different copies of Lolita. One was the UK first edition, inscribed "To Graham Greene whose courageous support of this book will be always remembered by Vladimir Nabokov", and the other was a copy of the Olympia Press edition with a simpler inscription and a butterfly drawing marked "Green swallowtail dancing waisthigh." I have looked through some Nabokovian lepidoptera resources in the hope of understanding this better, but with no joy so far. Assuming the colour is a reference to Greene's name, I wonder why a swallowtail and why dancing waist-high - can anyone help?
