Vladimir Nabokov

New Annotation: Mary, by Hanny Hindi

By stephen_blackwell , 7 April, 2026

Hanny Hindi's new work, "The Flesh Made Word: A Guide to Nabokov’s Mary," has just been made available to IVNS members in the Annotations section of The Nabokovian. This is an enormous and quite comprehensive commentary and annotation to the novel, in the spirit of the great commentaries by Gennady Barabtarlo on Pnin, Brian Boyd on Ada, Alexander Dolinin's commentary to The Gift. It incorporates all findings of the Russian, French, and German commentaries, as well as much new and original material. We are very lucky to be able to bring this material to Society members. Enjoy, Nabokovians, and huge thanks to Hanny!

Thank you so much for the kind words Steve, and for the incredibly detailed feedback on my commentary! (And thanks to Stas Shvabrin for his feedback on an earlier version as well, and to Eric Naiman and my anonymous reader for their help with my NabNote on the verses in Mary, which I've incorporated here.)

Looking forward to all of your thoughts, additions, corrections—and disagreements!
