SKB: It was Ovid who wrote the Epistulae ex Ponto from his exile in Tomis
If we trust VN's words in his Wisconsin Studies interview, Kinbote committed suicide on October 19, 1959, the day he completed the Foreword to Pale Fire. October 19 is the anniversary of Pushkin's Lyceum (and that of "poor old man Swift"'s death). Pushkin (who was banished from St. Petersburg and spent several years in Odessa and Kishinev, not far from the place of Ovid's exile) is the author of the elegy To Ovid (1821). He mentions Naso's shade in his poem "To Baratynsky from Bessarabia" (1822):
Ещё доныне тень Назона
Дунайских ищет берегов.
(To these days Naso's shade
Is still looking for Danubian banks)
Pushkin mentions Naso in Eugene Onegin (Canto One, VIII) and makes Zemfira's old father, a character in "Цыганы" ("The Gypsies", 1824), tell about Ovid to Aleko, his Russian son-in-law:
Меж нами есть одно преданье:
Царем когда-то сослан был
Полудня житель к нам в изгнанье.
(Я прежде знал, но позабыл
Его мудреное прозванье.)
Он был уже летами стар,
Но млад и жив душой незлобной -
Имел он песен дивный дар
И голос, шуму вод подобный -
И полюбили все его,
И жил он на брегах Дуная,
Не обижая никого,
Людей рассказами пленяя;
Не разумел он ничего,

The line "О Рим, о громкая держава!" ("Oh Rome, the celebrated power!") is turned to "Россия, громкая держава!" ("Russia, the celebrated power!") by Vladislav Khodasevich, VN's friend and a fellow exile, in his poem "Не матерью, но тульскою крестьянкой..." ("By a Tula peasant woman, not by my mother..." 1922).
The name Zemfira, of Aleko's gypsy wife, neatly combines "Zembla" and "fire". In fact, Zembla + fire = Zemfira + bel (Fr., beautiful). Ovid = void = divo (Russ., marvel)
