Doesn't VN make a similar "x to y" quip in one of his earlier novels? Something with regard to epistolary novels, maybe? I'm thinking Despair or RLSK?
The Polish word for notebooks is "zeszyty," but I can't see any evidence that VN knew it or wanted us to make that association (though the connection to writing/letters is tempting).
