Dear Sandy,
Sorry -- I don't mean to be indiscreet, but was it you
who supplied this information and this illustration?
I don't know where you got it, but want you to know that it is
utter nonsense. It was cooked up by a busybody who tried to
fool people with a half-baked hoax some years ago, and tried
to pawn off this rather sloppy sketch of his girl friend as a cover
for the unpublished Original of Laura. Its format is a
rough counterfeit of the Vintage Nabokov covers, but none of our publishers
ever had anything to do with it. It reappeared some years later on the "in
progress" list of a fly-by-night Russian publisher, and presumably referred
to something being written by a very minor author named Shishkin, whom I
caught red-handed in Zurich. By the way, this blogger and I have
never corresponded about Laura. It must have been some other
Dmitri. As for the book, it will be published for the first time
a year from now, and I have the cover design.
Best, Dmitri
