THOUGHTS: Folk Stories in VN

Dear List, MR and Sergei

I was hoping to hear more about John Rea's instigations for our discussion about semantic unity or dissemination, protolanguages and translatabilities.

But I was kidnapped by the wrong black moor into another discussion, dealing with VN and Folklore, when Sergei Soloviev's remarks about VN's elision of folkstories from his novels puzzled me.

How should I understand VN's references to Cinderella, Potato Elves, nymphets, Aladdin's geni, djinns, undines, trapdoors and keys? Lake Kitzeh, as mentioned in ADA, Nabok ancestors, nabab's?
Some even think that folkstories suffer not a "dissemination" but have a common "unity".
Could we begin by defining "folkstory"?
