THOUGHTS: Folk Stories in VN (European or Slavic?)

[EDNOTE. As someone who studies VN's allusions to European "fairy tales," in particular, I would be most interested in hearing responses from Slavicists on whether or not VN refers to Russian or Slavic folklore. SES]
Dear List, and Jansy,
I think I was not sufficiently precise when I told that
there is no folklore in VN's works. I would say rather
that there is no direct use of Russian or Slavic folklore.
All examples that Jansy mentions are references to
a) the type of "litterary" folklore published as books
(and being very popular as litterature for children)-
Charles Perrault (Cinderella), 1001 nights (european
translations), brothers Grimm...
b) and (except lake Kitezh) non-russian and non-slavic.
There was a russian opera about lake Kitezh (end of 19 century).
It is still popular.
I don't remember any story in russian "litterary" and non-litterary
folklore about "black giants", and story mentioned by
Matt seems to me too marginal.
