Dear Nabokovians,
For the first time ever the Nabokov Museum takes an exhibition abroad.
The ABC exhibit will be on London on April 13 - May 19 and then in
Oxford in July.
Those of you who are in London or will be there in April-May
are invited to see it in the Society for Cooperation with Russia
exhibition rooms.

The SCRSS, in conjunction with the Committee for External Relations of
St Petersburg, the St Petersburg Association for International
Co-operation and the Vladimir Nabokov Museum in St Petersburg, is
pleased to welcome Tatiana Ponomareva, Director of the Nabokov Museum,
to open the exhibition devoted to the work of Vladimir Nabokov entitled
"The ABC, Butterflies and Chess"
The exhibition unites four St. Petersburg artists who belong to
different generations: photographer Yuri Molodkovets, scientific
illustrator Natalia Florenskaya, artist Alexander Florensky and designer
Mitya Harshak. These artists have created works devoted to the main
trends of Vladimir Nabokov`s creative activity: literature, chess and
entomology.
Yuri Molodkovets
"Other Shores. Chapter 11"
In Chapter 11 of his autobiography "Other Shores" Vladimir Nabokov
recollects his visit to the State Hermitage Museum. Yuri Molodkovets, a
photographer of the State Hermitage Museum, introduces a series of
photographs, fragments of paintings, objects of applied art and items оf
the Hermitage interior. It is like a trip round the State Hermitage
which develops two of Nabokov`s themes: chess and butterflies.

"Butterflies"
Though the works of the famous scientific illustrator Natalia
Florenskaya
are rarely shown at art exhibitions, they are familiar to scientists and
students thanks to numerous scientific publications, text-books and
atlases. The series of water-colours show butterflies (Red Admiral,
Camberwell Beauty, Swallowtail, Gatekeeper, Marbled White, Small Copper,
etc.) that are mentioned in such of Nabokov`s works as "Pnin", "Lolita",
"Pale Fire", "Ada", "The Real Life of Sebastian Knight" as well as his
numerous poems and letters.
Alexander Florensky
"Audition Coloree"
Alexander Florensky has created a number of small canvases devoted to
the phenomenon "audition coloree" described by V.Nabokov in "Other
Shores". In the writer`s mind each letter corresponds to a definite
colour or shade. With the help of art, Florensky tries to illustrate
"the ABС rainbow" of V.Nabokov using the delicate and vague descriptions
of the author such as "brick-red B", "pale-yellow D", "rubber G",
pulverulent and alder F", etc.
Mitya Harshak
"Manuscript"
Mitya Harshak studies one of the early manuscripts by Vladimir Nabokov
in the context of graphic design, creating original type faces on the
basis of Nabokov`s shorthand. The analysis of each letter`s writing
helps to create the unique type (print) of Vladimir Nabokov. In his
posters Harshak delicately treats Nabokov`s manuscript, allowing only
small changes to Nabokov`s handwriting. The author very carefully
studies Nabokov`s manuscript, paying more attention to each letter of
the ABC rather than to graphic design. The ascetic black-and-white
posters attract attention to the graphic print and emphasise the
research character of the project.
The exhibition will on show until Saturday 19 May. Opening times;
11.0.am to 4.0pm, Monday to Friday (by appointment)
