MOST book-lovers know that April 23 is designated World Book and
Copyright Day by Unesco (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation). This day is celebrated in the hope of promoting
reading and publishing and the protection of intellectual property
through copyright.

The date was chosen by Unesco’s general conference because it happens to
be the shared date of death for literary giants Miguel Cervantes,
William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega; as well as the date
of birth of, among other respected authors, Maurice Druon and Vladimir
Nabokov.

in this tidbit
about World Book and Copyright Day from an article in Malaysia's Star
Online, which unfortunately seems to designate VN as "respected author"
rather than "literary giant":
