DN responds re: VN reading NY Herald Tribune etc. while in
Montreux

1. I'm fairly certain that, in 1962, the NYHT did not publish an
American edition. It had been a NY paper in the 40s and 50s. In 1962,
with the same title, it was published in Paris, but available throughout
Europe. Later, simultaneous publication began in other European cities
and in Miami and NY. The various editions were nearly identical, and
also often reprinted items from the NY Times.

2. We subscribed to the Trib, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, the TLS,
and had a permanent gift subscription, courtesy of William Buckley, to
the National Review, and one to Playboy, courtesy of the publisher. VN
bought British and sometimes French periodicals in Montreux, or received
them from acquaintances. He subscribed to US and European clipping
services.

I may well have overlooked something. If it turns up and I have time,
I'll be happy to forward.

Cordially,
DN

>Brian Boyd notes that in 1962, VN "[r]egularly reads New
York Herald Tribune and American magazines and literary journals." This
raises two questions in my mind:
