Query: Knackle and brocken in PF

Body
In the archive, Brian Boyd refers to a letter from Vera to Reuben
Abel, in which she writes "the Merriam Company supplied the correct
answers for lucciola, brocken, and knackle..." I know what luciola
means (glow-worm, firefly) but haven't been able to track down (my
books lie elsewhere) the other two meanings. Can someone, for my sake
and for the sake of future seekers, post the answer to the list? Also,
is Abel's correspondence with Merriam available somewhere? VNAY?
Many thanks in advance,
Matt Roth
