If I can digress into botany, I think of the vine on Shade hall
as Virginia Creeper, /Parthenocissus quinquefolia/, though maybe
I should be thinking of "Boston Ivy", /Parthenocissus
tricuspidata/, native to the Far East (thanks to Wikipedia for
information).

And back to words: according to the botanical writer Francis
Elmore, the reason virgins are mentioned in the name of this
genus is unknown.

(I've wondered whether the Zemblan "garl" is a taunt for etymologists,
since "girl" has no cognates and the etymologists would love to
have one. Now I'm realizing that "Parthenocissus" has a maiden
with a different mystery. Any significance to this? Not that I
can see.)
