Subject
Pubs; also "bacon," "up," and "will" as popular euphemisms

Jansy: your are correct (comme d'habitude!) Pub comes from Public Bar,
as
opposed to Private Bars where the posher people sup.
RE: The recent discussion on 'bacon' as penile 'euphemism' -- although,
of
coarse [sic], once such wink-wink-nudge-nudge terms become well-known,
they
become as 'offensive' as the plainspoken originals. It's difficult, in
fact,
to find ANY noun, verb or even preposition that has not been coopted for
sexual innuendo. Thus Mrs H to HH: "Has Lol been keeping you UP?" (more
cinema giggles than the 'bacon' scene?)
Has anyone noted the possible ambiguity in PF: "Help me, Will! Pale
Fire"
(962) 'Will' was Elizabethan slang for 'penis.' See, e.g., A L Rowse's
explanation of the sonnet in which Emilia (THE Dark Lady, don't argue),
enjoying the favours of both husband (another William) and bard-lover WS
"hath WILL in over-plus" (I quote from memory.)
