Subject
DN on VN's attitude toward music

A comment for for Sergei,
However you do have a point -- in fact a two-point basket. My father's
feelings about music were a bit oversimplified. He was annoyed by
elevator-type Muzak music, and by the thumping intrusion of pop. Yet,
when he could, he came to hear me sing. And he was very fond, for
example, of Bohème and Carmen, where the composer respected the
librettist and the librettist respected the novelist, the sum being
touching and expressive music. Besides, one cannot seriously deny the
music of VN's poetry or, for that matter, the polyphony of chess. And I
did once catch him mimicking my "Boris" in the shower...
Best,
DN
> Dear Matt,
a)In addition to my previous message. Maybe I
pushed my argument too far when I told that there is
no connection of the notion of "texture" in the poem with music.
