To: Vladimir Nabokov Forum
From Mary Bellino (iambe@rcn.com):
Sotheby's is auctioning two butterfly drawings with
inscriptions by VN to Andrew Field:
Two sketches of butterflies in pencil, colored pencil and ink,
one with an inscription in ink, accompanied by two other
inscriptions in ink to Andrew Field, Montreux, Switzerland,
1967?1971, all clipped from books, the largest clipping being
approx. 4 x 3 3/4 in.; 103 x 97 mm, matted, glazed and framed
in a single frame; not examined outside frame.
Two handsome Nabokov butterfly drawings. One of these drawings
is on green paper and is inscribed and signed by Nabokov on 1
January 1971; the other butterfly has no inscription. The two
other inscriptions are both to critic and biographer Andrew
Field. At the time these inscriptions were done, Field enjoyed
cordial relations with Nabokov. Later, however, a literary
dispute erruped, ending the period of warmth. One of the
inscriptions reads, "because we love Field, Vladimir Nabokov,
Sept. 25, 1967, Montreux."
Estimate is $4,000-$6,000 US; the auction is Nov. 30. If you
are registered on Sotheby's website you may view the listing
