Nabokov's (rubber) gloves

I've read, in BB, I believe, that VN wore thin rubber or latex gloves
when
working extensively in the library stacks at Cornell. The stacks being
steel, and the floor being carpeted for quiet, made static electricity
shocks a many-times-daily annoyance. Thin rubber gloves prevented this.
Some
careless reader may have conflated work in the stacks with work in the
field
to create a nonsensical notion.
