Much as VN disputed the work of Freud, there is one of the doctor's findings that VN might have found it hard to argue with. To paraphrase, the son that has his mother's unconditional, bountifully expressed love will usually go through life with a strong sense of confidence. Few children receive the abundant and unreserved love that VN had from his parents, as a child.
Most great writers I have read about seemed to have had quite the opposite sort of upbringing. The result has been the self-administration of spectacular amounts of liquor.

It is interesting that VN never (as far as I can tell) mentioned in public that he doubted his own genius. Most writers second guest themselves, talk about the hardship of writing, but VN always made it seem like writing was like breathing. Any comments?
