Re the issues of Nabokov's character's receiving messages from the dead
while they are asleep. Toward the end of The Real Life of Sebastian Knight
(1941) the 'I' narrator named 'V' experiences a dream involving his
deceased half-brother Sebastian. In the dream Sebastian has become a young
boy who possesses a terrible secret. Some clue to the nature of this secret
is provided by the tiny small hands that drops from the black glove he
wears on his left hand when he takes it off. Sebastian beckons to 'V',
indicating that he would say more about his troubles, but he cannot move
due to the heavy sacks lying across his legs. Sebastian's message has
ominous overtones, but ultimately his message cannot be fully expressed in
words. (Like so much else in VN's writings.)
