Dementieva keeps dreaming

CHASE OPEN IN LOS ANGELES – Elena Dementieva reads romantic novels,
doesn't like music much and pretty much ignores films. That makes her
atypical on the women's' tour, especially because when she's
discussing romantic novels, she named Vladimir Nabokov as one of her
favorite authors.

Yes, that Nabokov, the one who wrote so longingly about his famous
character's Lolita's baseline game. I'll pretty much stop there and
won't infect this blog with a imitation of how Nabokov would have
broken down Dementieva's game. She's too much of a straightforward
player for his odd tastes anyway.

But what he would have enjoyed is how unshakeable her beliefs are and
how she keeps dreaming big dreams, even though it's pretty clear that
the sixth-ranked Russian will never gain her much desired top spot.
Oh sure, she's s murderous off the ground and one of sport's fleetest
players. But the reality of her results over the past six years – two
Slam finals or not – make it pretty clear that No. 1 is not on the
radar. Just don't' tell her that.

Elena Dementieva is always thinking positively, aiming to No. 1.

"The reality makes my desire stronger," she told TennisReporters.net.
"As I long as I'm playing, I still keep trying."

Dementieva is also unusual in that she says she'll take the top spot
over a Slam title." It shows that you are the best one, no matter for
how long, one day or one week. That's what I've always dreamed of
since I was a little girl."

She simply won't give up on that hope, which is why, much to the
chagrin of those fans and analysts who can't stand to watch her
serve, that's she has been a top-flight contender for the past five
years.

But, although she can put on a tough exterior at times, Dementieva is
pretty sensitive and if she never gains the top spot, she may not go
into retirement a happy camper.

"It will be very difficult to live with," she admitted. "But I've
been very good at reaching my goals for a long time and I still
believe I can do it. But there are so many good players who want to
do the same thing. I know it won't be easy, but I still keep trying."
Dementieva will face Australia's Samantha Stosur in the second round
of the tournament here.
