EDNOTE. This is indeed a lovely area that I have hiked many times. It also
contained one of the highest concentration of diverse hummingbird species of
anyplace in the U.S.

Nabokov's Satyr (Cyllopsis pyracmon nabokovi)Great writer Vladimir
Nabokov loved the blues, his most famous butterfly the Karner blue.
Nabakov, equally respected as a lepidopterist and literary giant,
wrote an early draft of Lolita while spending a season across the
road from Myrtle Kraft Cottage. There, he wrote mornings and studied
butterflies afternoons. Though the family Lycaenidae contained his
favorites, he is known in this area for his work with the
Nymphalidae. Not only was Nabokov's satyr named for him, Nabokov is
also credited for his work with the two subspecies of the Pertepida
satyr. Nabokov's satyr is most common where oaks grow. Not a nectar
taker, it prefers partial shade and can usually be seen from August
through mid-October.Myrtle Kraft Cottage stands on 43 acres noted for
its superb population of birds, other wild animals, and plants. This
private property includes the mesa that ends Cave Creek Canyon in the
Chiricahua Mountains. Trails along both sides of Cave Creek and around
the base of its rugged hill go through prime habitat for birds,
reptiles and mammals. Located within easy walking distance of Village
of Portal, the Cottage offers a wild setting with civilization's
advantages.
