1782 _(August 7, old calendar)_
The 100th anniversary of PETER THE GREAT's accession to the throne
was marked by the unveiling of the monument to the czar in
St.Petersburg. It was the work of Etienne Maurice FALCONET. Yuri
FELTEN was the architect who supervised the putting up of the
monument and the preparation of the embankment nearby. Falconet began
working on the monument right after his arrival in Russia in 1766 and
two years later the model was ready. The head of the monument was
made by his pupil Marie COLLOT. The moulding of the statue on
horseback 5.3-metre-high was brilliantly finished by Russian workers
headed by the cannon-founder KHAILOV. A granite rock 5.1 metres high
served as a pedestal. The sculptor made it in the form of a sea wave.
On the occasion of the unveiling of the monument an amnesty to
criminals was granted. The monument was called “The Bronze Horseman”
thanks to the famous poem by Alexander Pushkin of the same name.
1812 (August 6, old calendar)
After two days of fierce fighting the Russian army withdrew from
Smolensk. General-Fieldmarshal BARKLAI-DE-TOLLI, who commanded the
Russian army, decided to leave the city in order to save the lives of
his “brave soldiers”, as he put it.Next morning the French troops
entered the burning city, which was almost empty. NAPOLEON on a white
steed passed through the main gates and was surprised that not a
single resident came to meet him. All of them left with the
retreating army. On the way they burnt the bridge over the Dnieper.
1845 (August 6, old calendar)
The Russian Geographic Society was founded in St.Petersburg on the
initiative of Admiral Fyodor LITKE. 1880 (August 6, old calendar)
The Third Department of His Majesty's Office was closed and its
functions were transferred to the newly-organized police department
of the ministry of the interior. T. LORIS-MELIKOV was appointed
Minister of the Interior. 1918 The All-Russia union of Soviet
journalists was organized. 1924 After crossing the Soviet border
Boris SAVINKOV was arrested in Minsk as a result of the well-prepared
operation by CheKa agents. Several days later he was sentenced to
death, which was changed to imprisonment. Next year it was announced
that Savinkov committed suicide in the Lubyanka prison. 1958 The
well-known novel “Lolita” by Vladimir NABOKOV came off the press in
the United States.
