Re: Michael Maar's evidence on the Lolita/Lichberg issue. As some of you appear
to be waiting for some public outcry about Michael Maar's new book: why should
we? Everything has been said long ago, it seems to me, perhaps more than should
have been said. It has convinced some, others it has not. That's life. There
would never have been anything disturbing about Nabokov's borrowing Lolita's
name from anybody; we all knew he didn't make it up himself. What was
disturbing was that nobody will be able to prove Nabokov borrowed it or whatnot
from Lichberg -- and that's because in all likelihood he didn't. I personally
find it somewhat but not acutely disturbing that some of us waste so much zeal
and acumen on issues that wouldn't make a difference in our understanding or
enjoyment of a book either way.
