I may have missed it, but the name "Borrowdale" is drawn from an area in
England where "wadd" (graphite) was discovered and mined. Legend has it
that its first local use was to mark sheep.

An excellent account may be found in a book by Henry Petroski--_The
Pencil_ that appeared well after TT. Ot does cite a number of ealier works
that VN might have encountered. I seem to recall there is a webpage on
this.
