EDNOTE. Akiko Nakata provides a chronology. This is essential for close
study of the book's structure SINCE AS A PART OF THE NOVEL'S THEME the
narrative is far from linear. A plotting of the time(s) of each chapter
differs radically from the straight time line shown below. The Russian
Formalists' crucial distinction of fabula and sjuzhet (story & plot).

TT Chronology (Beta Version)

1933
HP is born.

Goes to a New England (NH?) school of which his father is headmaster.
Enters to a university.

1954?
HP's mother dies.

1955
HP visits Switzerland with his father. Father dies.

1955-1962
After graduating from the university, HP works for Atman, and then a
stationary firm.

1962-1965
HP joins a publishing firm. After working as several kinds of assistants,
he works for Mrs. Flankard and then Mr. R.

1965
HP's 2nd visit to Switzerland. Meets Armande (Aug. 2?) and Mr.R (Aug. 3?).
Visits Villa Nastia and meets Mme.
Chamar (Wednesday, Aug 4). Runs across with Armande and Julia (Thursday,
Aug. 5). First hike to the cable car and failure(Friday, Aug. 6). HP's
first kiss to Armande and their engagement (3rd week of August). Honeymoon
in Stresa. Married life in NY.

1966
2nd week of February: HP's 3rd visit to Switzerland. Sees Mr. R.
2nd week of March: Armande dies.

1973?
Mr. R's last note to Phil and his death.

1973
HP's 4th visit to Switzerland. Revisits the places related with Armande
around Witt and dies on the first night at the Ascot Hotel.

I tried to specify the years. Hugh writes to Armande, "Would you permit me
to call on you, say Wednesday, the fourth?" (Ch. 10). We know from Julia
and Armande that the month is August (Ch. 13). According to a calendar in
hand, a possible year in which Hugh meets Armande is 1965 (or 1971) and the
"present" of the novel is 1973 (or 1979).
I am not good at numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

Akiko Nakata
