------------------ After a brief delay, ripples from the von
Lichberg/Lolita flap have reached the American Philological Association,
North America's largest classicists' organization. The latest issue of the
APA newsletter carries a lead article titled "On Lolita and the problems of
plagiarism," by Elaine Fantham, APA president and the author of many
well-regarded books on Roman literature. Fantham summarizes Maar's
article and goes on to discuss, to no particular conclusion but with a
generous sprinkling of Latin tags, aspects of the plagiarism issue vis a
vis both students and scholars.

The newsletter may be downloaded at

Anyone who has a few extra moments might want to read the very amusing
report, by James J. O'Donnell, of his experiences as the APA's delegate
to the American Council of Learned Societies, on pp 5-7 of the same issue.
