Dear Dieter Zimmer,

Thanks very much for your interesting notes. I did not know you had
identified the Russian writer (my German is so limited--I am grateful to
Duncan White for his translation) and I am excited to hear that. The
chronology
I made just depends on a date and I think it is not impossible that VN
should check the 1971 calendar on his desk while writing TT.
My question about Turgenev as the Russian writer is what we should think
about "a minor Dostoevski" that VN calls the Russian writer in an interview
(SO 195). Is it Nabokovian deception?

In your chronology, HP visits Switzerland with his father when he was 18
years old, but the narrator says, "Hugh, too, was twenty-two" in Ch. 5. What
led you to 18?

Best wishes,
Akiko Nakata
